| I've been through the horrible cycles of emotional eating myself. I have now turned around to help many other people, especially women, reach the same destination through self-empowerment. I do this not only as someone who has been through every inch of the emotional eating healing process, but also as a professional life coach and teacher of A Course in Miracles who has the skill, depth of training and know-how to help you self heal and regain a loving, heart based relationship to food. You are among thousands of women and men around the world that struggle with their relationship to food. Many people have NO CLUE that it is the emotional tie to food that is keeping them stuck, frustrated and continually searching for "what will work". Most people end up yo-yo dieting and subsequently end up giving up. The good news is that there are solutions and that is what I am about. As a life coach, I'm in the business of results. I've taken my skill at strategy and applied to personal well-being integrated with education about how the body works and why. Let's start with what matters most... your heart. There is a more effective approach to heal, at a heart level, the cause of your emotional tie to food. Dieting covers up the very core issues that keep the emotional connection to food very much alive. In my experience and in my private practice, I found dieting to strengthen the emotional connection to food, making permanent weight loss next to impossible. People either feel deprived of the foods they love or childish for having to be told how much food you are allotted in one day. Diets cannot work long term. Even if they could, would we want them too? "HECK NO!" Is my response (that is the nice version). Eating regimens that include counting calories, points, portioning and fat grams distract us to the point where we fail to see our own emotional and spiritual needs as well as our bodies needs. Red flag! This is because they use strategies outside of ourselves, or they extrinsically motivate us. What I call Intentional Eating, the method behind healing the emotional tie to food, connects you to your body, your needs and your wants at a heart level. It is this type of intrinsically motivating modality that engages you in the process itself... this is when results last naturally. Emotional eaters tend to experience:
We are taught all of the wrong things and the wrong ways to approach 1) our body, 2) our needs and 3) food. Societal influences, big companies selling products, well meaning friends and parental figures can make anyone crazy, confused, and frustrated. Years of having these influences, that typically conflict with one another, makes it easy to get caught up in habits that keep us overweight, overeating and overly frustrated. Have you ever tried to overcome a bad habit using sheer will power? It takes education. Will power only works as long as you feel motivated. When the feeling of motivation wears off, then you return to square one. This is a waste of time, energy and personal power. Dieting your way of out emotional eating doesn't work. This only leaves you feeling depleted on many levels and worse you end up losing faith in your own ability for self care. In order for a diet to work permanently, you have to remain on the diet for the rest of your life. Even if you could do this, would you really want to? A Course in Miracles tells us that true healing comes from healing at the level of cause and not effect. This is the same as healing the imbalance, not covering up the symptom. Covering up the symptom is the Western allopathic approach, that is not working on many levels. At what point are we willing to give up what doesn't work and take a stand for our own well-being? I have done it, many others have done it and you can too. I began my struggle with weight as a teenager. I was an emotional eater. I ate because I was happy, upset, stressed, etc. I dieted, gained and lost, gained and lost to no avail. I tried to starve. That never lasted very long because I loved food. I tried to be bulimic and decided I'd rather be overweight. I tried to exercise my way out of my weight. That didn’t work either, even though I had more energy. Although, I could surpass all of friends while hiking (not to mention my love for rock climbing was born) I remained overweight. I managed to average a size 10 when on a diet, even though it was a constant battling ground for me. Furthermore, the weight lost, always came back! I finally just gave up at the struggle at a size of 14-16. I figured I was a hopeless case since the struggles, days filled with guilt and frustration, where tiring and it was apparent that no diet was going to work for me in the long run. Giving up, not caring and ignoring the weight felt good.... at least for a while.
I then happened across Geneen Roth’s book, When Food is Love. This is when my transformation first began. I learned as much as I could from her books and attended a two day in-depth workshop, led by Ms. Roth herself. Geneen's principles made more sense to me than dieting ever had. However, the emotional healing component was still obscure to me. I needed more tools to cope with this transformation and began searching for every book I could find on healing. The one that impacted my healing the most was A Course in Miracles. The Course helped me face the underlying causes for my overeating while I integrated elements of, what I now call, Intentional Eating. After one year of research and application the weight started to come off without my struggling!!! I finally had something down to earth and real to work from. No more counting fat, carbs, calories or points! I was completely free from this! I found this approach is perfect for anyone who wants a clear approach that is down to earth, makes logical sense and empowers from within. I cannot stress the importance of this enough! Empowerment lasts. Healing wasn’t easy for me in the beginning. I had almost no support and I resisted every step with major skepticism. I was ashamed to talk to anyone openly and refused to seek professional guidance out of sheer embarrassment. I felt like a failure and didn't want to appear weak. After two years into my devotion to healing, release of dieting and ongoing research about how the body works, I was diet free, at peace, loving food on a deeper level and excited to be in my body; I had learned the education that led me to naturally (by natural I mean without struggle, apprehension or negativity) desire healthier foods and comfortable portions. I am now in my 30's and still naturally at a size 4-6. I have 3 children and run a busy private practice and lifestyle. This is coming from a person that had to finish everything on her plate, and couldn’t say no to dessert without feeling very deprived. Sound familiar? My natural weight came as a shock to me because even when I dieted I could only reach a size 10 and I thought this was my natural weight. I was shocked when I reached a size 10 and then kept naturally losing the weight without trying! This was my story. What is yours? Hopefully it hasn't been as chaotic as mine was. If it has, or worse, that is ok. What matters is that there are tangible answers and principles to help you heal and therefore succeed whenever you are ready to heal with food. Due to the impact of the Intentional Eating education, men and women are empowered to lose the weight they want permanently, fire dieting for the rest of their life, and enhance the fun they have with food. My private clients have moved from years of frustration to a place of joy and inner-peace with their weight, food and body image. What sets the Intentional Eating approach, program and coaching apart from the many other weight loss approaches, is the freedom you develop, at a heart level, around food for the rest of your life.... like learning to ride a bike. Unlike programs that want you as a lifetime member, my clients and readers no longer need the program, or any other weight loss program ever again after they implement the healing and education!
